What is a Zine?

A zine is a self-published, non-commercial print-work that is typically produced in small, limited batches. Zines are created and bound in many DIY ways, but traditionally editions are easily reproduced—often by crafting an original “master flat,” and then photocopying, folding, and stapling the pages into simple pamphlets. Zines may also be sewn, taped, glued—or even exist in unbound and other non-folio formats. The main rule is that there are no rules!

The two goals for our quarterly zines are 1. Promoting local bands, artists, creatives, non-profits and activist groups so they can gain more support with increased visibility and 2. Raise funds for our 501c3 community art non-profit (The Generator Maker Space) so we can host more low-income artists in the space.

More information about the zine project: Each quarter we do a call for art and all are welcome to submit their work. Our program assistant and zine editor Ray Frost compiles all of the offerings into the zine and then our translator, Marcela Rojas translates it into Spanish so it’s a bilingual zine. We print locally at Sindex and then host a free zine release party at various locations around Reno/Sparks.

We usually have 40ish artists contribute from all over the world.

This project is supported by a grant from the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission.

This edition of the zine was themed around Hive. The zine was created in March 2022 and compiled and printed in April 2022. We celebrated the release of this zine at Hub Coffee Roasters on Pine.

Your purchase of this zine helps cover the two free zine making events we host each quarter complete with free supplies for all to make art, plus the printing, compiling and translating of our zine and our quarterly free zine parties! You help us publish hundreds of artists work each year! Thank you!
